2012 SK Man of the Year
Port Orchard’s 2012 Man of the Year – Bob Morehouse - went to work at the Veteran’s Home in 1988 and has been a Harrison Medical Center employee since 2000. In about 1994 Bob was recruited as a volunteer for Fathoms O’ Fun Festival. He has worked tirelessly for the Festival all this time. He handled the carnival – maintaining contacts and negotiating contracts and when Fathoms could no longer obtain a good carnival for the summer festival, he developed the 3 day Summer Festival Craft and Vendor Show. This replacement event as well as Fathoms’ other vendor events- Festival by the Bay and more recently the Murder Mystery Vendor event, has helped to maintain a stream of income so that the remainder of Fathoms many events could continue. If Bob had not worked so hard for Fathoms, in many capacities, the organization might look very different today.
Bob’s continuing work for Fathoms is because he enjoys giving to the community. While at the WA State Veterans Home he volunteered for recreation activities with aged veteran residents. He is Harrison’s Golf League president and has been involved in this activity for six years. Before coming to Port Orchard, Bob was a youth sports volunteer. We are very pleased to be able to recognize Bob for his continuing volunteer work and take this opportunity to say “Thanks, Bob, for all you do”.
2012 SK Woman of the Year
Billi Jean Gurnsey
Billi Jean’s community activism in Port Orchard spans 17 years, though her commitment to community started long before 1995. When she moved to Port Orchard in 1995, she was asked to fill in for her marketing director at a Fathoms O’ Fun board meeting. By the end of the meeting, Billi Jean had volunteered to be on their board and her Port Orchard civic legacy was born. Her Fathoms board experience and work eventually led her to be Fathoms President in 1998. During the same time she helped with the City Hall Grand Opening committee. Billi Jean was in Soroptimist and joined their board serving in several positions, including service treasurer, board member, delegate and President in 2005/2006. In addition she was a member of the Port Orchard Chamber Board, serving as President in 2005/2006. Billi Jean ultimately served nine years on the chamber’s board during which time she worked endlessly on multiple committees both in a supporting role and as Chair. By her second year on the chamber board, she started the annual Business Showcase event and recently helped coordinate and celebrate the 10th annual Business Showcase. In addition, she joined the United Way board in 2006 and is currently planning to retire that post in January.
Billi Jean is currently a Sales Manager for Wave Business Solutions Seattle Region and continues her commitment to her community through the Chamber, United Way and Fathoms O’ Fun. We are proud and honored to introduce to you the 2012 Port Orchard Chamber Woman of the Year… Billi Jean Gurnsey.
